Abstract
This research project involves the generation and testing of a body of work that considers three design elements: (i) the colour [black], (ii) calligraphic type [regular script] and (iii) the grid [square]. The physical manifestation of this research was a series of visual documents. These visual documents generated from reflections on computerised Chinese calligraphic forms, consider the Oriental notion of a sense of stable harmony. This harmony results from a consideration of the creative interplay between repetition, regularity and rhythm in the Chinese stroke, the grid and the utilization of the colour black. The work deals with this idea as an essentially Chinese consideration rather than as a discursive analysis between Chinese and Western cultures.
The practical research is accompanied by a written exegesis of approximately 11,000 words.
